Hang the human rights lawyers, too. There's another dozen-or-so problems solved.

One of those stars is leading the investigation into the North Sea accident. Qualification? Legally yes, marine-wise... well, the CEO is a rather keen sailor at the local club, as admitted in the HM Gov profile. Quality.

I loved your last paragraph. Very relevant to the situation. I wonder if there are different legal sanctions which apply to our Muslim 'friends' that kill for 'honour'? An oxymoron of the first degree.

Oh, we should absolutely have it for honour killings. You have to show you are serious. Sara Sharif - her father should be next in line.

We need a new name for "honour killings", like "Grooming gangs" it whitewashes the extent of the crime.

I wonder what the Observer's opinion is on the Liverpool Care Pathway and the state Assisted Dying (Or "Murder") scheme?

Making the punishment fit the crime, as industrial strength corruption and political activism riddle the UK legal system.

A fine objective, but one that requires other things to change too.

See the way our legal dominated House of Commons threw away a key safeguard for the HM Gov Kill Bill even before it got to law. The system is unfit.

Great article and debate.

My contribution, cut off their bits and put them in an oubliette -the person not their bits!

Dear Laura,

Rather than hanging (which requires a scaffold, a large room, a trained hangperson, a stand-in hangman in case the hangperson gets a touch of the vapours, various prison officers, clergymen etc) might it be more economical & speedy to execute murdering scumbags with a CCP-style single shot to the back of the head. I’m sure Mr Musk could design a suitable metal box that a robot arm would hold the scumbag murderer down while a second robot arm fires the gun. Such a device would also be useful should society ever decide to dispense with human rights lawyers.

So this is the debate - is hanging a get out. I don;'t think so, otherwise in the US they would not spend so much time challenging the death penalty. Also in the UK, although I have some issues the prison system - it's not that tough. He will have it easy as he is in a wheelchair. And morally, the punishment should fit the crime.

“Serves no purpose”? Yes, it does. It rids society of the stain of the ongoing existence of these s**ts and saves us a vast amount of money to boot. That’s a huge purpose served. What’s not to like?

Oh, and any policeman found to have “fitted up” someone for murder should get the noose too. That would give them something to ponder on.
