These typically 16 year olds are legally treated as children, which they are, but their behaviour is akin to terrorism and Ireland has policy restrictions on the police that are ineffective in dealing with them. More deaths are possible unless the Irish State becomes less sentimental.
Car driving is an adult activity. 'Children' behaving as adults should be treated as adults for criminal law purposes.
And Labour want to give to vote to children. Perhaps they think that children and immigrants (and the woke) are the only way to stay in power. That is beneath contempt.
The 'community' the young men come from is similar one not far from where I live - Police chases several times a week, theft, random dangerous driving with zero safety margin, unique older vehicles at end of life, visits by the Police helicopter once a month.
The issue....
Not all Police are trained to deal with high speed chases, so if a regular Police Person (he / she / zey / it) has 'a go', it's not going to be pretty. The crims know this, so stick mainly to smaller roads and also exploit inter-force boundary 'demarcation'. Over the county boarder, 'can't get me'.
However, once the chase is on, for the crims no risk is off the table.
Such as driving against on-coming traffic.
On dual lane uni-flow roads there are techniques which can run ahead of the chase and bring it to a conclusion before injury or death occurs. On smaller roads that is much harder to do.
No extra law required - but judges really do need to ensure young adults who offend do not just get a pat on the head and an early release.
There is little to no presence of Gardai on the roads. I travel to work five days a week from the midlands to Dublin. I can't help but think these five young men were from chaotic homes.
Fully agree Laura. My nephew who lives in that hotbed of crime, Dorking, Surrey had his car stolen 3 weeks ago. The masked up morons who took the car using a device which turned off the alarm and started the car. They then drove around the area looking for other cars to steal. We know this because they left the dashcam running for 30 minutes before they realised it was on. They then tore it from the windscreen and threw it out of the car. It was found by a person who had seen a facebook posting about the car being stolen and returned it to my nephew. The sim card was still there and we were able to view the footage and their attempts to steal another car which failed. The police took the footage and were able to recognise one of the thieves who they said was "on remand for similar offences". Needless to say the car has never been found.
I can think of times it could be necessary to drive 'on the wrong side of the road', especially for emergency services. Ambulances and police cars do it often.
There seem to be adequate & more sensible laws already.
Political comments from those usual suspects are total rubbish. You can train for most High Risk pursuits, but wrong way Motorway pursuits are a completely different ball game. No one can be trained for a high speed wrong way pursuit; they are too fluid and far far too dangerous
I've seen and been part of perhaps three in my career, only one of which was intentional and all were stopped more by good luck than anything else, One didn't end too well for the perpetrator however , but there wasn't much sympathy for him.
Motorways can be closed, given sufficient time, planning and resources but at 3am in Ireland, that probably wasn't possible. Otherwise . . . it's the innocent that always pay. Getting them locked away early is the only feasible solution, but somehow I doubt that will happen any time soon unfortunately

How come some of these so called professional people get into these positions of power. To use another quote "They could not organise a p.... in a brewery"

A police marksman on an overpass/flyover putting a round into the engine block and/or driver of those morons’ BMW might have spared innocents serious harm and imparted a useful lesson in maanners.

It's one of the great tragedies of human existence that even the vilest piece of shit can only die once, just like their most undeserving victims.
For the future I'd suggest a solution that might seem strange.
Cut all child benefit for any child where the father isn't present.
